On Monday morning, Jimmy woke to a wide-open sky, the shocking expanse of blue confusing him until he realized he was lying in the back of a cart—one that was no longer moving. He bolted upright.

The cart was at rest in a field, in the middle of nowhere by the looks of it, and the untethered horse happily munched on grass in the distance. A low stone wall bordered the road that cut through the land, and Jimmy could see the gate through which they must have gained access. A thick hedgerow ran along the other side of the field, all the way down the slope until it was swallowed by a thicket of trees. He couldn’t see Kitty anywhere, or any other signs of life for that matter, save a wisp of smoke from a cottage.

Jimmy stood up for a better vantage point, shielding his eyes from the rising sun. He could see the farmhouse now, way off in the distance. Its whitewashed walls shone brightly, reminding him of the burning sensation the lime gave your skin if you brushed against it. The thatched roof had seen better days; he wondered how many rats and spiders had wormed their way inside.

He unbuttoned his breeches and took a slash off the back of the cart, taking great pleasure in the arc he could generate from this height. When done, his stomach started to rumble, and he dug out some cheese and bread and stuffed it into his mouth. He stretched out, lying back in the cart again, his hunger sated but his head still foggy.

The girl he was besotted with, the only one who’d ever shown any real interest in him, was a whore. And now he was trapped with her for the next four days. He knew it would take all his strength not to confront Kitty about what he’d seen. But he had to keep quiet, and he had to forget his interest in her. He had just one more thing to do before he left Ireland for good, and once Kitty had taken him to Vinegar Hill, he could put it all behind him. Start again. The thought of a new beginning filled him with peace. In America, he could be anything. Anyone.

Screams cut through his daydreaming. A woman’s voice. He jumped to his feet, cupping his ear.

Nothing.

Jimmy pulled on his boots, scanning the area from where the sound had originated, and then jumped off the cart and hurtled down towards the copse of trees at the sloping end of the field. His instinct was to yell Kitty’s name, but he thought better of it; he may need the element of surprise. When he reached the tree line, he stopped dead and held his breath, straining his ears for any noise. Dark possibilities flooded his mind. What if she’d gone picking flowers and bumped into the Militia? Or
